Local Data
Settings, saved words, and study state are primarily stored in the extension
If you do not enable sync, your data stays primarily on your device. Temporary subtitle caches are used only for the active session.
Sharing
Data is shared only when required to provide the requested feature
SmartLearner services and a limited set of third parties are used for account, sync, translation, dictionary, AI, and security logging features.
Your Control
You can delete data, close your account, or uninstall the extension
Local extension data can be removed by clearing extension storage. Account data can be deleted from dashboard settings.

1. Overview
SmartLearner ("we", "us", or "our") operates the SmartLearner web dashboard and Chrome Extension for language learning on supported video websites. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, when we share it, how long we retain it, and the choices available to you.
SmartLearner is designed for a single purpose: helping users learn languages with subtitles, saved vocabulary, and optional AI assistance while using supported services such as Netflix and YouTube.
2. Data We Collect
Account Information
- Name, email address, profile photo, and Google account identifier when you sign in with Google
- Preferred language, locale, timezone, and account preferences
- Account creation date, sign-in events, and security or audit log records
Learning Data
- Saved words, translations, context sentences, and source or target language information
- Quiz results, SRS review data, streaks, achievements, and learning statistics
- Supported-site source context you choose to save, such as platform name, series title, season, episode, and related metadata
- Extension version, enabled features, and sync state needed to operate the extension and web dashboard
Technical Data
- IP address and approximate geolocation derived from IP for security, fraud prevention, and operational logging
- Browser type, device category, operating system, and limited technical diagnostics
- Cookies, session identifiers, and API authentication tokens
3. Chrome Extension Data Practices
The SmartLearner Chrome Extension runs only on supported websites, currently Netflix and YouTube, to provide subtitle-based language learning features. This section explains what the extension stores locally, what it sends to SmartLearner services, and what it does not collect.
Extension Permissions & Why We Need Them
- storage: To save your word list, learning progress, and extension settings locally in your browser
- scripting: To run content scripts that display dual subtitles and enable word-click translation on supported platforms
- tabs: To detect when you navigate to Netflix or YouTube so the extension can activate automatically
Data Stored Locally in the Extension
- Saved words, translations, context sentences, and local study progress kept in extension storage until you delete them or enable sync
- Extension settings such as subtitle language, display options, learning preferences, and selected UI language
- Local caches used to speed up subtitle matching, translations, quiz scheduling, and review statistics
- Temporary subtitle and player-state data for the current supported tab or session
Data Sent to Our Servers
- When you sign in or enable sync, SmartLearner sends your saved words, learning progress, and related metadata to smartlearner.anutkin.com over HTTPS so they can appear in your account and web dashboard.
- When you use AI-powered features, SmartLearner may send the selected word, phrase, sentence, language codes, and supporting context needed to fulfill your request to our backend, which then forwards the request to the configured AI provider.
- When you authenticate, SmartLearner sends limited account details and authentication tokens required to create and maintain a secure session.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect or access your Netflix or YouTube account credentials
- We do not build, sell, or use a general-purpose browsing history profile. We only process supported-site page context and subtitle content needed for SmartLearner features.
- We do not collect content from websites other than the supported websites where SmartLearner runs
- We do not inject advertising code, unrelated third-party analytics, or non-essential trackers into web pages
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for advertising or marketing purposes
Data Retention & Deletion
- Local extension data remains on your device until you remove it, clear browser or extension storage, or uninstall the extension.
- Account-synced data is retained while your account is active and can be deleted from dashboard settings. Some security or audit records may be retained for a limited period when required for abuse prevention, dispute handling, or legal compliance.
- AI request content is processed to generate a response. SmartLearner may retain limited technical logs for security, rate limiting, debugging, abuse prevention, or legal compliance, and third-party providers may process data under their own privacy policies.
4. How We Process and Use Your Data
- To provide the core SmartLearner experience, including dual subtitles, saved vocabulary, review, and dashboard features
- To authenticate your account, sync data between the Chrome Extension and the web dashboard, and let you export or delete your account data
- To personalize your learning experience and calculate progress, streaks, achievements, and review schedules
- To fulfill translation, dictionary, and AI-assisted learning requests that you explicitly trigger
- To secure the service, prevent abuse, troubleshoot problems, and send essential service notifications
5. Cookies & Local Storage
We use cookies and browser local storage to enhance your experience:
- Session cookies: To keep you logged in and maintain your preferences
- Locale cookies: To remember your language preference (Turkish/English)
- Extension local storage: To cache word data and settings for offline access
You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but some features may not work properly without them.
6. Data Sharing and Third-Party Services
SmartLearner shares data only when needed to operate the product. Depending on the feature you use, data may be shared with SmartLearner services, Google LLC, OpenAI, DictionaryAPI.dev, and ip-api.com.
We limit shared data to what is necessary for the requested feature and do not sell personal information or share it for advertising.
Google OAuth
We use Google OAuth for secure sign-in. When you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account name, email address, profile image, and account identifier needed to create or link your SmartLearner account. We do not access Gmail, Drive, or other Google services.
OpenAI and User-Configured AI Providers
When signed-in users trigger AI-powered features, the selected text, context sentence, language metadata, and request details are sent to SmartLearner backend services, which proxy the request to OpenAI. If a user chooses to connect their own AI endpoint in the extension, requests may instead be sent directly from the browser to that user-configured provider. Processing by third-party AI providers is governed by their own privacy policies.
Google Translate Service
When translation features use Google Translate at translate.googleapis.com, SmartLearner sends only the text required for translation and the language codes needed to return the result.
DictionaryAPI.dev
When dictionary or pronunciation lookup is requested for an English word, SmartLearner sends the queried word to DictionaryAPI.dev to retrieve definitions and phonetic data.
IP Geolocation Service
For security and activity logging on the web dashboard, SmartLearner may send your IP address to ip-api.com to derive approximate country and city information.
7. Data Storage & Security
We take the security of your data seriously and implement industry-standard measures:
- All data is transmitted over HTTPS with TLS encryption
- Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never stored in plain text
- Database access is restricted and monitored
- API authentication tokens are securely generated and have limited validity
- AI proxy requests are rate-limited and sanitized to prevent abuse
8. Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Correction: Update or correct inaccurate data
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and all associated data
- Export: Download your saved words and learning data
- Objection: Opt out of non-essential data processing
9. KVKK Compliance (Turkish Law)
In accordance with the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK, Law No. 6698), we process personal data lawfully and transparently. As a data controller, we comply with all KVKK requirements including data minimization, purpose limitation, and data subject rights.
Turkish residents may exercise their KVKK rights by contacting us at the email address provided below. We will respond to data requests within 30 days as required by law.
10. GDPR Compliance
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), we comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Our legal basis for processing your data includes:
- Consent: When you create an account and agree to this policy
- Contract performance: To provide the services you requested
- Legitimate interest: To improve our services and ensure security
- You may request data portability, restrict processing, or withdraw consent at any time
11. Chrome Web Store & Limited Use Disclosure
SmartLearner is distributed through the Chrome Web Store and complies with the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies, including the User Data Policy and Limited Use requirements.
SmartLearner's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
- We do not sell user data to third parties.
- We do not use or transfer user data for purposes that are unrelated to the core functionality of the extension (language learning and translation).
- We do not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
12. Children's Privacy
SmartLearner is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete that information.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of SmartLearner after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
